Galentines day flicks to distract you from a bae-less V Day

Oh, what a time to be loved up? With the UK being locked down until further notice, evenings spent in restaurants or bars are off the table. Of course, there is the option of a ‘Zoom Date’ if you don’t live with your loved one. But who really wants to spend yet another evening on Zoom? Certainly not us.

But what about us single pringles? If you haven’t heard, Amy Poehler actually devised Galentine’s Day which combines all the romance of Valentine’s Day with our beloved female friendships.

Of course, sadly we can’t currently get together with our friends but we can still enjoy the positive girl power vibes. We recommend selecting your most comfortable tracksuit bottoms (from your ever-expanding collection), ordering a decadent takeaway, sourcing the highest alcohol percentage bottle of wine that you can get your hands on and settling down with a chick flick.

Here is our round-up of eight of the best chick flicks you can watch in the UK on all the various streaming platforms available - including Netflix, Now TV, and Amazon Prime. Of course, honourable mentions must go to The Devil Wears Prada, Clueless, Legally Blonde, Mean Girls and Bridget Jones’ Diary. But we’ve all seen those haven’t we? If you’ve somehow missed any of the above then get on it pronto.

Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion

available to rent on Amazon Prime

#FLODown: This movie encapsulates every feel good emotion ever; it’s all about getting dressed up in cute af outfits and having fun with your BFF no matter what. The 90s aesthetic is stunning and the soundtrack is even better with truly laugh out loud moments! It has our favourite Friends female, Lisa Kudrow, along with Mira Sorvino and Janeane Garafalo.

Bachelorette

available on Amazon Prime

#FLODown: This movie doesn’t follow the usual guidelines of what an uplifting movie about girlfriends should consist of, and that's why it’s great. It’s bitchy, it’s gritty and it portrays realistic concepts of what it sometimes feels like to be in competition with your friends, but no matter how crazy life gets, you will still stay up all night and walk to the end of the earth to make sure one another is okay.

Girls Trip

available to rent on Amazon Prime

#FLODown: This movie encapsulates everything we love about female togetherness, you are reminded that as long as you have your friends by your side you will always be okay. Who needs a man, right? Featuring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith this movie follows the ‘girls’ on their wild trip to New Orleans.

Bridesmaids

available on Netflix

#FLODown: Despite the fact this movie is literally about a wedding, that's not even the main point. Your sides will be splitting from laughing whilst you bear witness to the wacky occurrences throughout this movie; this is my go-to feel-good movie, Galentine’s Day or not!

Booksmart

available on Netflix

#FLODown: This is a relatively new coming-of-age movie that features Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever. The movie centres on the two central female characters who are both in their final year of high school. Realising that they haven’t really done anything fun or wild, they decide to break the rules and go to a party. It’s a bit ridiculous, but funny, heart-warming and will make you want to text your best friend for a good old gab.

Little Women

available on Now TV

#FLODown: Little Women has had so many adaptations, and really, they are all great in their own special way. At the core of the story is the love between sisters and what better version of friendship to depict than the one between sisters? The newest adaptation was directed by Greta Gerwig and features a pretty star-studded cast including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern and Timothée Chalamet (the only man you need on Valentine’s Day).

I Feel Pretty

available on Amazon Prime

#FLODown: Amy Schumer stars in this comedy about a woman who falls over and hits her head; when she comes round she is under the impression that she is the most beautiful and incredible woman in the world. This film really does highlight how important confidence, self-belief and self-worth are; be prepared for an epiphany if you’re someone who loves to criticise and doubt yourself at every turn.

Dumplin’

available on Netflix

#FLODown: Dolly Parton fans unite! This movie has the most incredible soundtrack, featuring the best of Dolly Parton’s back catalogue along with a few fun new tracks. It’s yet another coming-of-age film, but they just are the epitome of feel good aren’t they? Jennifer Anniston plays a former beauty pageant, who is mum to Willowdean (“Will”). Will decides to enter a beauty pageant (even though it’s pretty much against everything she stands for) along with her edgy feminist friends. The film follows her journey in the pageant world, with all the trials and tribulations that it brings, whilst covering themes such as body image, beauty, confidence, friendship and family.
