Quick Guides: why you need to visit Megalochori, Santorini

Santorini is home to several small villages; one of our favourites is the village of Megalochori. The village offers a nice escape from the main tourist trap, located a short distance from Fira and will offer a unique and fresh experience of Santorini.

The village is completely dreamy filled with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and traditional cafes serving the very best in traditional Greek food surround the public square.

The Food and Ouzo

Food in Santorini is one of the highlights of the island, from calamari to cuttlefish, you’ll also find some of the finest traditional Greek food that Greece has to offer. Santorini has loads of eateries from tavern styled eateries to more upmarket fine dining restaurants. Some of the best Greek food you’ll find will be in villages such as Megalochori. Some of our favourite dishes included Authentic Greek Fava and Greek Moussaka, these coupled with some local wine makes for the prefect meal. You will find several restaurants in the square of Meglochori serving exactly this.

#FLOFavourite: Try a local drink called Ouzo. Ouzo is considered the ‘national drink’, often served with feta and olives. Be warned this drink is not for the fainted hearted!  Ouzo tastes quite similar to Sambuca.
