#FLODown: Klára Hosnedlová’s embrace is on show at Hamburger Bahnhof as the inaugural commission of the CHANEL Métiers d’art fund. This large-scale installation takes over the museum’s main gallery. Born in the Czech Republic, Hosnedlová is known for her work combining sculpture, textiles and architectural detail, often referencing modernist interiors and traditional craft. In this exhibition, she creates a carefully constructed environment resembling a fictional archaeological site. The installation incorporates ceramic objects, hand-embroidered textiles and architectural fragments that suggest both past and future. The work explores the relationship between material culture, memory and gendered labour, reflecting on how artisanal techniques can preserve and reshape cultural identity. The commission connects directly to CHANEL’s celebration of craftsmanship, while Hosnedlová reimagines these traditions in a contemporary context.

#FLODown: Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya brings her site-specific work Fog Sculpture to the outdoor space of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Since the early 1970s, Nakaya has developed a distinctive practice using pure water vapour to create constantly shifting clouds of fog. The Berlin edition of her work responds to the surrounding architecture and weather, creating a changing experience that depends on light, air currents and the viewer’s movement through space. Her fog sculptures challenge traditional ideas of form and permanence, encouraging reflection on natural processes, visibility and interaction. This work is part of the museum’s ongoing sculpture programme and is presented in cooperation with Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

The sculpture is activated on the hour between 11 am and 5 pm. On Thursdays, activations run until 7 pm. Each fog sequence lasts for 8 minutes.

It offers a comprehensive overview of her contribution to both 20th century art and contemporary discourse.

#FLODown: ToiletFotoPaperGrafiska is a provocative group exhibition that embraces irreverence, wit and the raw edge of independent publishing. Blurring the lines between photography, printmaking and DIY zine culture, the show offers a mix of satire, protest and absurdist humour. Artists use lo-fi materials and unconventional formats, think photocopies, disposable cameras, found images and toilet paper, to tackle themes ranging from bodily politics and media overload to social taboos and everyday frustration. The tone is playful but pointed, poking fun at institutional conventions while questioning who gets to be seen and heard.

#FLODown: Extreme Tension: Art between Politics and Society at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin explores how artists from 1945 to 2000 responded to the political and social upheavals of their time. Spanning movements such as Art Informel, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, the exhibition unfolds across 14 thematic sections including realism and abstraction, protest, feminism, identity, and ecology. Rather than offering straightforward answers, the works ask how art can remain politically and ethically engaged in turbulent contexts. Featuring artists like Joseph Beuys, Lee Bontecou, Francis Bacon, Valie Export, Bridget Riley and Gerhard Richter, Extreme Tension offers a reflection on the role of art as resistance, commentary, and catalyst.

Date: 30 July – 20 October 2025. Location: Neue Nationalgalerie, Potsdamer Straße 50, 10785 Berlin. Price: from 14 EUR. Concessions available. Book now

Helmut Newton: Polaroids

Helmut Newton, Italian Vogue, Monte Carlo 2003 (SX-70)

#FLODown: Polaroids opens up a lesser-known facet of legendary fashion photographer Helmut Newton’s working process: his extensive use of Polaroids. Often viewed as disposable or preparatory tools, Newton’s instant photographs are here reframed as a distinct visual archive in their own right. Shot during test sessions for editorial and commercial assignments, the Polaroids document informal moments, wardrobe experiments and lighting setups, revealing a more improvisational side to Newton’s famously polished images. They also offer insight into the recurring themes of glamour, voyeurism and control that run throughout his work. Stripped of retouching and studio sheen, these images feel more candid, even vulnerable, and add a layer of intimacy to his iconic photographic language.

Date: until 28 September 2025. Location: Helmut Newton Foundation, Jebensstraße 2, 10623 Berlin. Price: from 12 EUR. Concessions available. Book now
