Varvara Roza Galleries to open a new exhibition of paintings by Anthony Daley

An exhibition of recent paintings by the Jamaican-born British artist Anthony Daley is set to open at Varvara Roza Galleries on Duke Street in St James's from 10 to 28 November 2026. Curated by Isabel de Vasconcellos, Resonance brings together paintings made between 2023 and 2025 across all three of the gallery's spaces, in what the gallery describes as a staging of Daley's artistic vision at its most vivid and assured.

Daley's work sets figuration against abstraction, and in the paintings selected for Resonance the balance tips further towards colour. The figurative elements are less distinct than in his earlier work, and across these large canvases colour is what carries each painting.

Daley first saw Dutch and Italian painting as a child in Jamaica, in reproductions, and that early encounter has shaped his brushwork ever since. He has said he wants his own painting to stand in dialogue with that tradition, an ambition he set out directly in Son of Rubens at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2022, which he developed from works in the gallery's collection. Delacroix belongs to the same line, having started from Rubens himself and used colour to carry feeling.

Daley graduated from Chelsea School of Art in the early 1980s and was the first artist shown in Angela Flowers Gallery's Artist of the Day series, which later featured Tracey Emin and Nicola Hicks. He has received the Pollock-Krasner Painting Fellowship, and his work is held in the collections of Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and Dulwich Picture Gallery. Varvara Roza Galleries is led by its founder Varvara Roza, an art advisor, curator and agent with more than ten years in the contemporary art market, who represents established and emerging international artists and advises museums, collectors and institutions on acquisitions.

Resonance will open at Varvara Roza Galleries, 8 Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BN, from 10 - 28 November 2026. Visit  varvararozagalleries.com for more.
