London art exhibitions to look out for in 2027
London’s galleries are preparing for a year of ambitious exhibitions in 2027, bringing together some of the most influential names in modern and contemporary art alongside artists whose work is only now receiving wider recognition. From Monet and Munch to David Hockney, Sonia Boyce and Algerian artist Baya, the exhibitions will range across centuries, continents and disciplines, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, installation, film and design. Here are the major London art exhibitions to have on your radar in 2027.
Many galleries and institutions are yet to announce their 2027 programmes, so this listing will be updated as new exhibitions are announced.
Punk to Pop

#FLODown: Punk to Pop will explore the creative explosion across music, art and fashion between 1972 and 1985. It will look at how glam rock and disco gave way to underground scenes and the DIY spirit of punk before those ideas filtered into the pop culture of the 1980s. Around 300 objects will feature, including stage costumes, photography, music videos and graphic design, with artists and groups including the Sex Pistols, The Slits, The Specials, Joy Division, Wham! and Eurythmics. The exhibition will also considers the austerity, political turbulence and technological change of the period, alongside changing ideas around individuality, sexuality and identity.

Monet: Painting Time

#FLODown: Tate Modern’s first major exhibition dedicated to Claude Monet will bring together many of his best-known paintings with rarely seen works. Drawing on new research, it will explore Monet’s lifelong interest in time during the Industrial Age, looking at fleeting moments, changing light, shifting seasons and the passage of years. Works from his Water Lilies series will offer another view of the artist’s fascination with the changing world around him.

Phillip King: Kamakura Ceramics

#FLODown: Camden Art Centre will look at a lesser-known chapter in the career of British sculptor Phillip King, focusing on ceramic works he produced in Japan during the 1990s following a residency in Kamakura. Influenced by Japanese ceramic traditions, King experimented with hand-built vessels and glazes, producing more than 70 works that have never been exhibited in the UK. The exhibition will highlight his interest in materials, form and artistic exchange between Britain and Japan.

Catharina van Hemessen: Signature Works

#FLODown: The National Gallery will present the first UK exhibition devoted entirely to Catharina van Hemessen, one of the earliest European women painters whose work can be identified with certainty. The exhibition will bring together signed paintings from international collections, focusing on her small-scale portraits and the importance of her name and signature at a time when few women worked as professional artists.

Baya

#FLODown: This will be the first solo exhibition of Algerian artist Baya in the UK. More than 100 gouache paintings will introduce her distinctive use of colour, geometric patterns and imagery drawn from the landscapes, flora and fauna of Algeria. The exhibition opening at Tate Modern will also examine Baya’s influence on twentieth-century artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso and André Breton, and her place in modern art history.

South Asia Now: Fashion. Art. Design.

#FLODown: South Asia Now: Fashion. Art. Design. will explore the contemporary creative landscape of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka through more than 200 works across fashion, art, architecture and design. The exhibition will focus on artists, designers, architects and makers working across the region today, moving beyond presentations based mainly on heritage and craft. Rare loans, new commissions and works being shown in the UK for the first time will look at creative practices shaped by shared histories, cultural exchange and generational knowledge.

German Expressionism: Modern Painting 1900–1918

#FLODown: The National Gallery will bring together more than 50 works by German Expressionist artists from Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, including paintings by Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. The exhibition will look at the period between 1900 and 1918, when artists in Germany challenged established ideas about painting through new approaches to colour, form and brushwork. It will also consider how the First World War changed the movement and the lives of its artists.

Sonia Boyce

#FLODown: Tate Britain will present a major retrospective of Sonia Boyce’s career, exploring more than four decades of an influential practice rooted in collaboration and improvisation. Across installation, photography, collage, drawing, film and sculpture, Boyce has explored questions of collective memory, identity and representation. The exhibition will examine her contribution to contemporary British art and the ways her work has helped reshape conversations around race, gender and cultural experience.

#FLODown:Thuy Tien Nguyen’s first UK solo exhibition at Gasworks will feature a large sculptural installation built around a moving conveyor belt made from industrial steel and carved wooden fragments. Objects drawn from Vietnamese, Thai and British contexts, including ritual krathongs, will move along the conveyor in a repetitive and unresolved motion, set to reworked pop music. The work will consider how memory and identity are changed through movement, migration and global systems of production.

#FLODown: Tate’s first exhibition devoted entirely to the tradition of ink painting will explore how artists across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan transformed an ancient practice into a modern form of expression during the twentieth century. The exhibition will bring together paintings and calligraphic works while considering history, philosophy, innovation and the continuing relationship between ink painting and the natural world.

Sculpture in Clay: British Ceramics 1985 to Now

#FLODown: Sculpture in Clay will examine how British artists have pushed clay beyond its traditional association with ceramics, establishing it as an important material for sculpture and installation. Work from the mid-1980s to the present will include pieces by Jacqueline Poncelet, Antony Gormley, Edmund de Waal, Richard Deacon and Clare Twomey. The exhibition will look at artists who have challenged conventional ceramic practices and experimented with clay in both fired and unfired forms.

#FLODown: Marking the 300th anniversary of Thomas Gainsborough’s birth, Tate Britain will bring together around 120 paintings and drawings by one of Britain’s leading eighteenth-century painters. Alongside his famous society portraits, the exhibition will explore his landscapes, experimental techniques and creative process, offering a closer look at the contrast between his finished paintings and the experimental work that went into creating them.

#FLODown: The Courtauld Gallery will bring together almost two dozen paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe made between the 1930s and 1950s, exploring her connection to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. Desert skies, rock formations, Cerro Pedernal, flowers, bones and skulls will reveal how the landscape became an important source for her work. Many of the paintings have not previously been exhibited in the UK. A photographic display will also offer a glimpse into O’Keeffe’s life at Ghost Ranch through rare colour and previously unpublished photographs taken for Life magazine.

#FLODown: A major retrospective of Nalini Malani’s work at Tate Modern will cover six decades of her artistic practice and will be her largest exhibition to date. It will bring together multimedia installations, paintings, drawings and moving-image works, exploring how Malani uses mythology, literature and history to address conflict, injustice, displacement and gender.

Chintz

#FLODown: Chintz will explore the 400-year history of South Indian chintz, following the journey of a hand-drawn cotton textile that became one of the world’s most sought-after and widely copied fabrics. During the 1600s and 1700s, chintz travelled across continents and social classes, influencing fashion, interiors and design. The V&A will focus on the skill of the South Indian makers who created its intricate designs, with works from its collection shown alongside pieces from the private collection of Karun Thakar.

#FLODown: The Royal Academy will present a major exhibition of work by American sculptor Simone Leigh, including new pieces shown in the UK for the first time. Leigh combines sculpture with architecture, video and performance, often examining representations of Black womanhood at scale. The exhibition will introduce her work to audiences at the Royal Academy as part of its 2027 programme.

#FLODown: More than 50 works will chart Lynda Benglis’s career, from her poured latex works of the late 1960s to large sculptures in bronze, ceramics and glass. The exhibition will look at the ways Benglis challenged traditional ideas around sculpture and painting through her use of materials and form, and the influence her work has had on artists over the past 50 years.

David Hockney

#FLODown: Marking the 90th birthday of the late artist David Hockney, this major exhibition at Tate Britain will bring together more than 200 works from across his career. It will explore the importance of family, friends and lovers in Hockney’s art, from his early depictions of queer love in the 1960s to portraits of his parents and recent paintings made at home. The exhibition will offer a personal look at Hockney’s interest in human connection, portraiture and storytelling. Hockney will be the subject of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall installation, with a multimedia work celebrating his lifelong passion for opera. The installation will bring his celebrated set and costume designs to life through vast-scale projections, music and animation.

Bringing together some of his most powerful works with contributions from contemporary filmmakers, the exhibition will highlight the cinematic qualities of Munch’s art, examining how his use of composition, colour, perspective and emotion created powerful visual stories about love, desire, longing, identity and loneliness, and how his distinctive visual language continues to resonate with contemporary film and storytelling.

#FLODown: An exhibition drawn from the celebrated collection of the Museum Berggruen in Berlin will open at the Royal Academy of Arts, featuring works by three defining figures of European modernism, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee. Through their distinctive approaches to colour, form and composition, the exhibition will explore the ways these artists transformed the language of modern art, while revealing the unexpected connections and contrasts between their practices.

#FLODown: Tate Britain’s first major exhibition devoted to Tudor art in more than 30 years will bring together more than 150 works, including oil paintings, miniatures, works on paper, sculpture and decorative objects. The exhibition will look at the period when modern Britain and British painting began to take shape, with portraits of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and other key figures alongside works that reveal the artistic achievements of the Tudor court.
