Tarek Atoui to create the next Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall

Tate Modern has announced that Tarek Atoui will create the next Hyundai Commission for the Turbine Hall. The artist and composer is known for works that explore sound as a physical and spatial experience, combining custom‑built instruments, environmental recordings and sculptural elements within large‑scale installations.

Atoui’s practice draws on research into music history, instrumentation and listening, producing environments that encourage audiences to engage with sound beyond conventional hearing. His works often incorporate materials such as glass, water and ceramics, and are activated through touch, movement and mechanical processes, integrating instrument, sculpture and space.

With this commission, Atoui joins a series of internationally recognised artists who have previously created site‑specific works for the Hyundai Commission, including recent artists such as Kara Walker, Cecilia Vicuña, El Anatsui, Mire Lee and Máret Ánne Sara, as well as earlier participants like Olafur Eliasson, Es Devlin and Tino Sehgal. Open to the public for six months, his installation will continue Tate Modern’s long-standing programme of large-scale contemporary artworks in the Turbine Hall.
