Kahlil Joseph's BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions launches 180 Studios’ new cinema with month-long residency

BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions, the debut feature from acclaimed artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, will inaugurate the newly opened cinema space at 180 Studios in London with a month-long residency from 27 February to 27 March 2026. Presented by Rich Spirit, the residency marks the first film to launch the venue’s new screen and is conceived as a hybrid experience that moves between screening and exhibition. Staged within a gallery-cinema environment, the project offers a space for viewers to experience the work as both film and installation, fostering reflection, conversation, and collective engagement while challenging conventional distinctions between artwork and theatrical presentation.

Adapted from Joseph’s acclaimed moving-image installation first shown at the Venice Biennale, the film presents a multi-layered cinematic journey inspired by the rhythm and structure of a record album. Called a “fugitive newscast,” it weaves together archival material, original footage, and cultural references to offer a reflection on Black history, humour, media, and memory. Combining fictionalised portrayals of figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey with contemporary voices, the work spans 247 years across land and sea, examining past, present, and future through a perspective centred on Black consciousness.

The residency also reflects a decade-long collaboration between Joseph and 180 Studios. Previous projects have included the staging of his Kendrick Lamar ‘m.a.A.d’ installation as part of The Infinite Mix (2016), the commission of his film Fly Paper (2018), and the original BLKNWS® installation, which later travelled internationally. In 2024, 180 premiered BLKNWS® in the UK within The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition. With this new chapter, BLKNWS offers an alternative model for experiencing film at a time when moving-image works are increasingly consumed in fragments online.

Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, Rich Spirit is a curatorial film label dedicated to amplifying voices from the global diaspora. The company partnered with Joseph to secure the rights to BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions and bring his debut feature to audiences worldwide. Together with 180 Studios, the residency offers a new way to experience cinema, combining art, film, and community in a shared, durational encounter.
